Role of quantum dots in nanotechnology
- The quantum dots are nothing but a cluster of atoms whose dimensions are of the order of a few nm
- Due to the similarity of its electronic structure with that of an atom, these structure are also called artificial atoms
- If quantum dots could be integrated onto a chip, their unique electrical properties could be harnessed to perform a function similar to a conventional transistor, while requiring only a small fraction or the space.
- An appropriate regular array of a quantum dots would allow a compute processor more powerful than any current supercomputer to be constructed on single chip.
- Quantum bits exist as a combination ( a linear super position) of two quantum logic states, represented as |0> and |1>. Quantum dots offer a variety of two-level systems one is a coupled e- hole pair-an exciton.
- The absence (the state |0>) and presence ( the state |1>) of an exciton in a semiconductor quantum dots could represent the two levels of a quantum bit.
